New Year's Resolutions
For the last few years I’ve made new year resolutions, it’s what got me into photography as a serious hobby, so I’ve been thinking a lot about what I would set myself this year.
I want to do things a bit differently this year and focus the resolutions on my photography as it has become a huge part of my day-to-day life. I want resolutions that will allow me to get better and learn a lot in...

Festive Shooting
It’s been far too long since I stocked up on film properly, the last time was for our trip to Edinburgh Airport last Christmas. I say Edinburgh Airport because our flight to Paris was cancelled due to snow and we took the saddest bus trip back to the house (we made it in April finally). Since then I’ve only bought a handful of rolls at a time.
With Christmas offers floating around I...

REVISITED: "Up Close and Personal"
Six months ago I read a post by Andrew Pearson of The Impassioned Eye about a project he had taken on called “Up Close and Personal”. The project sounded terrifying but really appealed to me since it was completely the opposite of anything I had done and far outside my comfort zone. I wrote about how I would take this on myself but it soon slipped off my radar as I went on holidays and...

In Bruges
The events of the night before had left us shaky and so we decided that what we needed was a very relaxing day in Bruges.
Bruges is nice - no matter what Colin Farrell says - It was buzzing with tourists which - although we were tourists - was a different scene than we were used to in our small town of Ypres.
Street Performer - I had spotted this street performer earlier in the day cycling...

War memorials, beer and an early bed
We woke on the second day of our trip with plans to take in the sun and sights of Ypres but we were greeted with rain as we left the hotel. Turning on our heels we headed for the car to tour some of the war cemeteries in the area instead.
First stop was Tyne Cot, the largest Commonwealth cemetery of either World War holding 11,954 soldiers there, 8,367 of which are unidentified. The weather had...

Roadtrip to Belgium
At the start of August my wife and I loaded up the car and hit the road headed for Dover. We had decided to have a week in Belgium, relaxing, drinking beer and eating chocolate; how could life get any better?
My wife is a school teacher and has accompanied the school on many occasions to Belgium for war memorial trips and this was something I had been quite interested in for some time. At the...

High Force
Thanks for all the reassuring words about my last post, it means a lot to hear that this kind of stuff happens to everyone. I was unlucky, a series of small issues I had snowballed into a bigger problem which ran from my expectations from the camera, to the cheap film I had chosen, to the processing lab. I think if I’m honest the answers are simple; find out where the Zenit-E sits in my...

Give it a little time...
It’s over a month now since I got back from the Lake District where my wife and I, and all her family spent a week to kick off the Summer break. I’ve posted a few pictures of this time from the Kodak Ektar 100 rolls I shot on the Pentax SP500 and a few Holga shots. The black and white shots are still waiting to be developed and that is waiting on me getting myself to Camerabase to buy...

Film Processing Services
I’ve been having trouble with my local photo lab and have decided to stop using them. Sadly this means that a photo lab in Edinburgh really isn’t going to be the best option so opting for a postal service within the UK. What services do you guys use?

Armed Forces Day: The Main Event
I wasn’t quite expecting the day that was Armed Forces Day so loaded with the Zenit-E and a couple of rolls of Kodakplus 200 I captured a few of the people that this day meant so much to as well as the uniforms they wore.

Armed Forces Day: A shortcut
I had toyed with the idea of heading to the Armed Forces Day main event in Holyrood Park but only because I had enjoyed shooting the Red Arrows so much with the Zenit-E the night before. It felt good to be using it again and I didn’t feel guilty with my cheap film.
There was a parade by the various Forces and Veterans from Edinburgh Castle, down the Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyrood,...

Armed Forces Day: The Red Arrows
I mentioned I bought rolls of this film a few weeks back and how cheap it was from Poundland…£1 to be exact. I bought the same roll from the photography specialist in Edinburgh’s High Street and it cost me a lot more at £3.50 (I still don’t know why I did).
The first thing I shot with it was the Red Arrows display on June 24th as part of Armed Forces Day. I was quite surprised...
