Goodbye old friend. I’ve just posted off my iPhone 3GS to be recycled in exchange for money. This future money allowed me to treat myself to the 64Gb version of the new iPhone I upgraded to last Friday.

The phones are essentially the same when it boils down to it, they have different hardware on the inside but operationally they do the same thing. But I really will miss this phone; it was my first iPhone, the first smartphone camera I had a lot of fun with and like any ‘first’…you never forget it .

To be able to take a photo, edit it, and upload to Flickr is a novelty I’ll never tire of. Once I bought this I never bought any other point-and-shoot digital camera and that has allowed me focus more on my film cameras.

I’ve used lots of apps in the past two years, but my favourite amongst them all has been Hipstamatic. I understand that apps like this get a lot of stick from film enthusiasts but I am one and I love it. Not because it merely adds filters to a digital photo to give the look but unlike some apps, it keeps an air of mystery just like film photography; you can’t upload a photograph to it and then chose the filter that suits it best…they can only be taken within the app and you don’t know what you’ll get until it’s processed. Add “Shake to randomise” and you’re onto a winner. I think this is why I’ve never taken to Instagram that much…though I do persist, I always put it down.

The new camera is even better with great noise reduction in night shots. Yet again I can save the money of a point-and-shoot digital camera and video camera to put towards my film photography. Plus, maybe I’ll play with video more this time around.

I’m in the process of sorting through all my iPhone 3GS photos so I’ll post a few of my favourites as I do that.
