I bought a three-axis spirit level from Amazon to let me have a little more fun with the Holga. I enjoy the Holga but using the “viewfinder” just seems pointless; it doesn’t tell me if I’m in focus or if I’m capturing what I want, but at the same time shooting without looking usually results in squint photographs.
This little gem cost me £5 and slides into any hotshoe but on the Holga it is a little loose and slides back out with any sudden movement. Cutting a small piece out of an old envelope worked a treat at creating a tighter fit though. It consists of three small spirit levels on the three axis that you’d use between landscape and portrait.
I shot a roll of Lomography 400 medium format film this morning and it was good having the camera around the my neck and shooting from just about waste level by standing in front of what I wanted to shoot, levelling up and clicking the shutter. Ideal for street photography and made me really consider my position in relation to the subject. We’ll see what the results come out like.
